Glaciers, Breaching Orca's, and a Visit from My Family

I am back doing laundry at Sips and Suds and it's a miracle! There was 3 open washers today (even at 9am) and I needed to do exactly 3 loads! No having to fight anyone for a washer today! Easy going for me! (Just in case anyone was interested in more laundry drama...). Anyways, this week has been really great so far. It was the week my mom and little brother (well not so little anymore) had booked to visit me in Seward since the beginning of summer. We only had Monday and Tuesday together, so naturally, we tried to pack in as much as we could to do. First off, we couldn't of got any luckier with the weather! This Monday was the hottest day Seward has ever had, EVER! It was 86 at the hottest when I checked it. Now 86 is not very hot for me coming from Sacramento, CA, but for all these cool weather folk in Alaska, they were roasting! But hot or not, the sun was shinning bright, allowing the majesty of Seward, all it's mountains, it's glittering bay, and ever glowing green plant life to be seen in full glory! (Side note-it's rainy and cold today...just stuck around long enough to give the family a good glimpse of how gorgeous it can be here). It has only been a few months since I saw my mom and brother but I was excited to see them as always and was even more excited to show them the town I've been living and all it's got to offer. To top it off, in addition to them coming to visit down from Anchorage, my great aunt and uncle and my mom's cousin Brent all came down too. I love this side of the family, they are so fun!

They drove my mom's cousin Brent's motor home down here and arrived at about noon where we met up at the best seafood restaurant in town 'Ray's'. It was good to catch up, get a beer, and chow down on some yummy food. I had a salad with blackened halibut...mmmmm!!! While eating, me and David talked to my cousin Brent about his experiences with whitewater rafting, we are really excited to try it soon! We made a plan for the rest of the day, finished our lunches and walked the shops with my mom where she picked out some souvenirs for my nieces and nephews back home. And then we decided to go to the SeaLife Center, which is a very popular stop for tourists, and David and I haven't gone yet. We spent a few hours walking through, looking at the amazing sea life exhibits and viewing the animals. My favorite was seeing the little kids scream excitedly when they got to see the 9 foot, 1,7000 pound sea lion swim by. Each time he did, the kids would jump and scream with excitement. It was the cutest thing! I also really loved the harbor seals and the puffins! We mingled around the downtown part of Seward and stopped in for a beer at the brewery where I work  to get a beer and so I could show off my family to my coworkers.

Me and my not-so-little-anymore brother, Alec on the Rez Bay lookout!

Another one of me and David.

Since it was so nice out and would be light out forever, we decided to take a walk out by Exit Glacier which sits just a few miles out of town. Exit Glacier gets it's name (according to David) from when a Russian man thought he could trek across the Harding Ice Field (the HUGE ice field where many glaciers extend out from) and when he decided he could not, he exited the ice field on this glacier, now called Exit Glacier. Fun little history there, hope I am accurate. We drove to the park (let me add here that on the way we snacked on salmon dip that Brent's wife makes and it was AMAZING, I could of ate the whole bowl!), parked the motor home, and took a little hike (very little, just a little over 1 mile). We walked and got to the glacier, but along the way they have little sign posts with years on them to show where the glacier had once extended out to. It was awesome to see this thing and hear it cracking and to hear the water running off of it. It was also really neat to hear my mom and my great aunt Sandy describe how it looked the last time the saw it over 10 years ago and realize how much the glacier has receded since then. My brother, Alec, was having a really good time, he loved the hiking and walking through the rocks and woods. We took some fun pictures and even heard of someone sighting a bear about 150 feet from the trail (which made my mom want to run back to the car!).

On the walk to Exit Glacier-I'm very excited....
Exit Glacier and all it's glory!
"We Love Glaciers!"

We got back to the motor home safe and without any bear encounters! But saw some signs that provided helpful information in case of a bear attack or sighting!

Wildlife sightings the day we were at Exit Glacier.
Good to know information...
After that our bellies were getting hungry and we went to get some dinner at a restaurant called Chinnooks. My and mom split king crab legs, they were sooooo yummy! The night was mellow and we ended it with making S'mores on the beach where Brent was camping his motor home for the night. My mom was on otter watch, but we didn't see any! But we all assured her the next day on our wildlife tour we would see plenty! After a few s'mores, good conversations, and some great family time, we called it a night and made plans to met at 7:30am (too early for me!) at the tour company and get set for a day at sea!

:)
Yummy S'mores by the fire! Obviously Alec loves his...
The next day, we lucked out with another gorgeous sunny day! We all checked in, got our boarding passes and hopped onto the Coastal Explorer to set out on our 6 hour tour of the bay, wildlife, and the glaciers! Since David works for the place, we were lucky enough to get a little VIP treatment, which included coffee (for me since I can't ever get enough, LOL) and 2 pairs of binoculars so my family could see everything up close and personal! :)

Ready for the trip!
Alec, his hot cocoa, and my mom enjoying the day!
We were on our way, excited, and within a few minutes we got to see a sea otter floating along in the bay. No matter how many I see , I can't get enough of these cute little creatures! They're so lovable and adorable! I was happy that my mom and brother were with me to see all this amazing stuff! Our boat traveled along and within the hour, we spotted some Orca whales. And we were so lucky! While watching them swim about, they started to breach! It was like they were showing off and playing. They would dive down and then swim up, jump out of the water, show us their magnificent being and land with a big splash! It was so neat to see this because other than the occasional visit to Seaworld, I'd never seen this happen before! It was so amazing to see these animals do this in their natural environment! We also were lucky to see a few humpback whales! They weren't as active as the Orcas on this day, but we did see it swim for a bit, and got a flash of the giant tale of the animal right up close to our boat! As we made our way to the glacier, we also got to see the porpoises swim and jump right up next to our boat. My mom and brother loved it! It felt awesome that they were getting to see all this amazing stuff! I had hoped for an amazing day for them, full of sea life, beauty, and fun and we were getting it! My mom even got a video on a orca whale swimming right next to our boat! It was awesome!

My beautiful mom.

We finally made out way out the the glacier! It probably was my favorite part! It was so amazing to see this! It is a tide water glacier, meaning the glacier comes all the way out and meets the ocean. We made out way close up to it and the captain turned the engine off on the boat. We got to just sit there and watch this massive ice form in all it glory. Every once and while we could see a big chuck break off, crumble, and splash massively into the water. My favorite thing to do was to close my eyes and just feel the glacier. You could feel the cool wind that blew off the glacier and kiss your face, you could hear the cracking and the slow moving of the ice and the massive splash it would make when it hit the water.    Seeing the glacier was so amazing and humbling. It literally took my breath away. It was one of the most amazing things I've seen since I've been in Alaska. I really hope my mom and brother loved it as much as me!

Enjoying Holgate Glacier!
After the boat trip was over, we got our land legs back, and prepared to say goodbye. However, we first stopped for one more bite of homemade fudge and chocolate at the sweet shop here in Seward. After our sweet tooth was satisfied, we unfortunately had to say goodbye. My mom and brother were off to keep enjoying their Alaskan adventure up in Anchorage with the rest of my family. It was sad to say goodbye because I always miss them, but it was so awesome to have such a good time with time and do so many things within the two days they were here! I'm trying to talk my mom into letting my little brother stay for a week or so longer and stay with me in Seward. I think he would love it! But we'll see!  So good to have a piece of home when I'm so far away! :)

That was this weeks excitement so far and a long work week is ahead of me! This weekend is summer solstice and I guess the town loves to celebrate! I hope everyone is doing amazing and I'd love to hear from you!

Lots of love and hugs!

Backpacking Caine's Head

Someone help me to rotate pictures on the blog....LOL

This week I had some new and amazing experiences! Seems like all my Alaskan experiences have been new and amazing, but this one is up there with the best so far. On Monday and Tuesday, we went on a short overnight hiking/backpacking trip to a spot right out of Seward called Caines Head. Caines Head is towards the end of Resurrection Bay that Seward is on. It’s a fairly easy hike, not a lot of hills, but in order to get to it, you have to time the tide because a section of the beach is not crossable during some tides. We were lucky enough that the tide schedule was easy, we had to cross at 9am going in and at 10am going out the next day. Sometimes the tide is scheduled for 4am…yikes! So Sunday night we packed our bags and planned when we had to leave the trailhead in order to safely cross the beach at low tide. I have never been on an over night backpacking trip so I was constantly asking David “do I need this?....Where should I put this?”. But I did it, I got everything I’d needed for the short trip in my backpack ($20 at the Goodwill well spent!). I tried it on with all the stuff in it, it felt snug and it seemed heavy, but not too bad. Plus I was a Tough Mudder, I could do it, right? Anyways, we got to bed by midnight and planned to get to the trailhead at 8am. The trailhead sits on a place called Lowell Point, which is a small community outside of a Seward 3 miles and it’s a popular spot for cabin rentals, kayak tours, and other getaways.

We got there on time, paid the parking fee, and we were off! In my normal adventures and hiking, I like to walk fast or even run, but with 30 extra pounds on my back, I decided to take it easy and enjoy the views and scenery. The first mile and a half is all in the woods, crossing over big rocks where the snow must have melted and so was left rugged. It was gorgeous though and the smell! The scent of the woods there was so fragrant and sweet. It smelled how you’d imagine a candle named “Sweet Alaskan Spring” would smell! Then after that mile and half, we came out of the woods to a clearing. An amazing and perfectly clear spring ran underneath the bridge we were crossing into the bay. I was humbled by the beauty of the clearing, beautiful creek, green grassy meadow, all opening up to the bay and giant mountains being kissed by the sun. We kept walking along the trail, which led us to the beach! The park sign before we even started the trail described this trek as “Walking on the Edge”. From the first view, I could see why. The whole way to the north side of Caines Head, was on the beach.

More Beautiful Views

We started our way on the beach, and quickly I heard “Jillian!! Jillian!”. I was like “who is calling my name way out here?”. It was my friend from work, Maria, who said she might try to join us, and she did! She caught up to us on the beach. So David, Maria, and me started to trek the beach. Within minutes, we were all sweating. For Alaska, it was so hot! I think it was about 70, but when you are up here 70 feels like 85 or 90! It felt good when we came across a little stream to splash our hands and face in the icy water to cool off. Shortly after the start of the hike, we noticed what we are pretty sure was a seal, bobbing up and down in the water swimming. The farther we kept hiking, we kept seeing him. He followed us for a good while, sticking his little head out of the water. I imagine he was saying “hey guys, whatcha up to?”. We named him Seal, after the 90’s artist famously know for the song “Kissed by a Rose” and we even tried to sing it a little bit in honor of our new friend. The seal wasn’t the only wild life we got to see up close on this adventure. About halfway down the beach, Maria wanted to change, so she went off behind a rock, and David and I were just  standing there still, resting. The David heard something up in the trees and then pointed out there was a group of about 5 river otters up there. We stayed as still and silent as possible in order not to scare them away. The river otters are SO cute! They looked at us, sniffed super loudly, and made their way down the cliff side to some rocks. They are very shy little creatures so once we moved they hid in the rocks. So we kept walking and when we turned around, we saw them waddle across the beach and dive into the ocean. I guess it was lunchtime for them! From what David’s learned at his job, River Otters are extremely shy and don’t usually like to be seen by people. ( I have pictures coming and will post as soon as I can retrieve them from Maria's camera!) So the fact we got to see them so close up and watch the group of them walk around and get into the water is super rare! We were so lucky!

On the beach!
Trekking the Beach

We found a waterfall on the way!

After hiking across the beach for a few hours, we got to the trailhead on Caines Head. Personally, I was grateful for some shade, I was getting really hot and forgot sunscreen. We got to the fork in the trail and decided to sit for a bit. It felt SO good to take my heavy pack off and get a snack. Dried mangos, trail mix, and dark chocolate never tasted so yummy! Maria even had homemade coconut cookies, yum! After a picnic, we decided to take the trail to Fort McGillivray. The trail splits where we were and you could go to the old military fort or a trail called “Alpine Trail”, but the Alpine trail loop was another 8 miles, and I didn’t think I had it in me. We hiked another 2.5 miles to the old fort, of course all up hill…but our climbing was not for nothing, once we came to the clearing, we were on the cliff, with the most amazing view! It was a perfectly clear day, no clouds, and warm weather! We could see 3 glaciers, Fox Island (a small island with a resort on it), and the edge of the bay. All 3 of us took our packs off, laid down by the cliff, and took a nap in the sunshine! After our nap, we decided to set up camp there, since it was such a beautiful place, and spend the rest of the day relaxing, reading, and enjoying the view. Maria had to hike back out at low tide that night so we said our goodbyes to her and set up our tent with a million dollar view. I was so tired from a few hours of sleep the night before and from the hike with the heavy pack, I took another nap!

***I’d like to add in a little bit about making sure you are properly hydrated on a hiking trip. I don’t think I drank enough water on the way in and had about 20 minutes of being super irritable and grumpy. So my apologies to David and Maria, thanks for putting up with my sourness for that little bit.

In the evening, we looked down at the bay and saw some wildlife swimming around. We were trying to figure out whether it was whales or porpoises. But after some debate we decided it was a couple packs of Orca whales. We watched them swim around from high up on the cliff. It was amazing and we really wished we would have brought the binoculars!

View from the top!
Our friend we made at the top!

Camping on top of the world!

I love this picture.
While up on the fort, we explored it’s old lookouts and shelter (not sure what it was used for). It was really dark inside the shelter structure and had many rooms, which looked like dungeons, but maybe also looked like storage? Any history lovers want to help me out here? Here are some pictures…

Minus being a little chilly, I slept pretty well in the tent, only waking a couple times. Camping in Alaska in the summer is challenging. Besides kind of always having a thought that a bear will eat you, you  wake up to the lightness of the sun, expecting it to be 5 or 6am, but you look at the clock and it’s 2am and still light out. I think for me, it will take some getting used to…but after going to sleep for a few more hours, we woke up at the right time to allow time for packing up camp, and getting to the beach for the tide schedule. The hike back felt shorter and quicker to me. On the way back, my muscles were feeling weak, my shoulders ached from the pack, and my belly was growling for some food! We let time pass and discussed what to eat for lunch when we got back into town. It was tie between breakfast or Thai food. There is an AMAZING Thai place in town called Woody’s. We ended up deciding on Woody’s Thai Kitchen because their panang curry is to die for! We were delighted to find they were open!

Once we got to the car, I was so happy! I took off my stinky boots and even stinkier socks and threw on my Teva sandles to let my swollen feet relax! I couldn’t help but feel proud of myself! I was proud of myself for making it through the hike, carrying my bag, camping, and making it all the way back (with only a minimal tiny grumpy patch). I felt it was a great first introduction to backpacking and I can’t wait to do it again! But this time, I think I’ll leave some things behind….maybe 2 beanies and 3 headbands was a little excessive.

We got to Woody’s Thai Kitchen starving and I was excited because they weren’t that busy! We ordered Thai Iced Coffee which I had never had before. Let me say this, this was the best coffee ever! Perfectly sweet, strong, almost chocolately, and topped with cream! It was AMAZING and perfect after being sweaty and hot from hiking.  I might have a new addiction…Our food was, as always here, amazing. We stuffed ourselves! We dragged ourselves home, lugged our bags upstairs, took hot showers, and passed out for a nap. A hot shower and nap never felt so good!

I am so happy I got to experience this trip! Backpacking is amazing. Who knew this California city girl would fall in love with nature so much? There is something so special about being out in nature, experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells. Backpacking helped my mind to quiet, any anxieties to settle, and allowed me to let go of the crazy world, even just for 2 days. Time goes slower when I was backpacking and I felt I could actually listen to my body and let go of any stinky thoughts. I am really looking forward to doing more backpacking, hiking, and camping! I think I found another love...

For next week I’ve got some fun stuff happening too! On Monday and Tuesday, my mom and little brother will be here for a visit! I hope Monday we can have  chance to go on a walk out by Exit Glacier and on Tuesday we are going on a tour of the bay, whale watching, and seeing glaciers. I’m excited to see my family and show them all what I’ve done here in Alaska so far! Maybe if my mom sees what I’ve been up to here, she’ll maybe worry less? Or maybe it’s a mom thing to never stop worrying about their kids…? Anyways, until then! Hope you all have an amazing week and I’d love to hear from you and how you are doing! Also, come visit! We have a couch for you to sleep on!

Homer Sweet Homer

Love in Homer! :)

Here I am, back at Sips and Suds doing laundry, so it must mean it's time for another post! So funny here at this laundry place. It's always busy no matter how early you come and there is no real system to marking your spot in line for a washer. So you just sit there and wait, then when one opens up, you have to run for it and claim your washer! Maybe it will be a new reality show..."Combat Laundry Mats" or "Battle of the Laundry". Anyways...this post is not about laundry so sorry to bore you! :) But seriously, it gets crazy in here! At least they have coffee and delicious sandwiches to keep us happy!

David and I finally got some days off together and decided to get away to Homer for 2 days. It  was awesome and I really liked the town! When we were first taking off and packing the car full of our camping stuff, overnight bags, and things, we spotted the cutest squirrel! He was so tiny and cute, just sitting there up in our tree, nibbling away on his little morning breakfast. Inspired by a blog of a friend, I named him Chipp (after Disney's Chipp and Dale) and we hope to see him again! :) He seriously was so cute and he let me get up pretty close to take his picture.

Lil Chipp having his breakfast!

Homer was a pretty far drive, as everyone had told us, but for some reason I really didn't think it'd take so long. We stopped halfway for pizza and stuffed ourselves! We were hungry and a little hung over from the night before so pizza was perfect! The drive was gorgeous! In and out of the mountains, along riversides, and lakes. There is something about the water here that is mesmerizing. It's color is so tranquil and beautiful, it's like a glacier, turquoise blue. Not even a camera can capture it's beauty! When ever I look at it, I can't help but feel like I'm being renewed and healed. It might be one of my favorite things this landscape has to offer so far!

Beautiful Blue Water

Anyways, we finally made it to Homer and it was a normal overcast day that a town on the bay would have. To me, it automatically felt like a mix between Santa Cruz boardwalk (it's cute and artsy) and an episode of the deadliest catch (a big halibut fishing community there). We spend a few hours walking the spit, exploring the fun shops (I bought myself a pretty moonstone ring!), scooping out where to eat later, and of course made a spot at the famous 'Salty Dawg Saloon', a bar at the end of Homer Spit. It's...well...salty. The walls covered in dollar bills, women's signed bras, and the even bar tender fit the description of "salty".

Salty Salty :)

After wondering around, our bellies grew hungry, and after doing a little research, we located a sushi resturaunt that had amazing views of the farm land, bay, and even a glacier! The views were great, but we were dying for some sushi because there is no sushi in Seward! :( We ordered 3 rolls of different kinds and sadly quickly became disappointed, it wasn't that good. But the views were amazing, our server was sweet, and we were on a lil 2-day vacation so oh well! :)

Cute Lil Shops on the Spit

David being goofy on the beach!
We spent some time walking on the beach, looking for cool rocks, seashells, and other trinkets. I found a rock that looked like a heart and made a game a of finding the most "heart-looking" rock we could find. We found one and made it the winner!

My heart rock!

After we got our fill of walking around, we picked our camp spot right on the beach on the spit! And I was going to get my lesson of setting up a tent and starting a fire. Of course the lesson began with wine first. It was fun setting up our spot and setting up a fire. My first lesson was "usually you want to set up camp before it gets dark, but this is Alaska, so as long as we set up before 1am we're ok". We set up our tent fine, had an easy time starting a fire, and started to make smores! The secret to a good smore is not to use hersey's chocoalte. LOL! We bought some nice and yummy 72% dark chocolate which went perfectly well with our melty marshmallows and cinnamon graham crackers! Mmmmmm!! Here are some pictures from our camping experience...was so fun!

Love in Homer...wacky and silly (I don't know how to rotate the photo, LOL!)

Roasting the Mallows!
Scrumptious Dark Chocolate S'mores
Our Campsite-it's close to midnight in this picture! Land of the Midnight Sun!
We woke up to a light rain and packed up! We searched for the best breakfast place in Homer and found our way to Sourdough Cafe. Let me begin by saying.... "OH.MY.GOODNESS"! It was the best breakfast! It was funny too, me and David had been talking about how we have yet to eat at a place that blew our minds, but I think we spoke too soon! This place was amazing! He ordered the salmon scramble with cinnamon french toast and I got the veggie scramble! Both were amazing, but the winner was the cinnamon french toast! Best french toast we both have ever had! We liked it so much that we bought a loaf to take home! Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmm!! Was so good! We stuffed out faces and washed it down with hot coffee! If we go back to Homer, we'll for sure be back at the sourdough to eat!

Delicious Coffee! They even gave us a little free sample of pastry while we waited for food!
David's delicious meal!

My veggie scramble complete with cauliflower, sweet potato, purple cabbage, and carrots! :)

After breakfast, we wondered around the artsy part of Homer, full of funky stores, fun local bookstores, and yummy coffee! David bought some books and I got some coffee. We felt done with shopping and wandering around and decided to head back to Seward!

Cute Bookstore! We could of spend hours and hours in there! What a find!
I really liked Homer! It was a funky little community, full of spirit, and interesting things! We made it home safe and I am hoping that we get to go back to Homer before the end of summer! We shall see! I think that's all I have to say about Homer. :) It sure was nice to get away for a couple days and spend time with David too! Who knows what next week will bring....hopefully more camping & adventure!

Thinking of you all! Love and Hugs!! :)
